JO QUAIL + GGGOLDDD + AMENRA @ Ronda Tivoli: live pics
by Miriam Cadoni
After the chaotic last two years, the world is back to normalcy. In this case, normalcy means enjoying that adrenaline of a concert. Here in The Netherlands, the concert venues are getting full and full of musical appointments. Femme Metal Webzine will try to attend all the best live shows in the area for the report here with stories, interviews, and photos.
Without further ado, it’s time to start with my review. Just remember this date and location. Because on the 5th March in Utrecht, the inferno played on earth. The trio of bands composed by Jo Quail, GGGOLDDD, and Amenra proved to be the perfect conception of power, music, and sonic bliss.
Only for a pure reference, keep in mind the two keywords of this editorial piece: post-everything and wall of death. Why do I use these two essential words? Because the three bands have applied the essence of these meaningful words in their manner.
The role of the opener lies in British cellist Jo Quail during her short show, in which she played “Rex Infractus”, “Gold” and “Adder Stone”, she completely mesmerized the audience with her music and her electric cello. If you think that a cello would sound feeble on a big stage. Well, you’re wrong. Simply because, Jo with her passion, her well-constructed loops can fill the stage as it was an orchestra playing.
With the release of their fifth LP “This Shame Should Be Not Mine”, GGGOLDDD is back with the bang. Their savvy mix between trip-hop, post-metal, and electronic shows no boundaries. And, from the last time that I’ve had the chance to attend one of their shows, I have perceived a sensible maturity in their sound. It feels like that with “This Shame Should Be Not Mine”, they have found the right formula to express themselves.
Alas, we come to the last act of the night. Fresh of their opus “De Doorn”, the Belgian post-doom, sludge metal band Amenra delivered one of my favorite post-pandemic show. Just music and intermittent while lights. Do you remember when I mentioned the words “post-everything and wall of death”? Well, before closing, it’s important to get back to them. Indeed, Amenra, during their show, condensate the substance of these two words. For the whole duration of the show, you feel literally absorbed by the music as it was an endless trip. This enormous wall of sound will make you forget the present. And, literally jump you into a perpetual continuum.
