The Corrs – “White Light” (2015)

In 2005 The Corrs released their last album and then followed individual pursuits. Now, ten years later, and twenty-five years since the band formed, they have united to create “White Light”. They have always prominently used traditional instruments like the bodhrán (frame drum), tin whistle, and violin as well as more universal sounds of guitars, drums, and keyboards. There is an Irish accent vocally and in their song writing, so Irish Folk Rock describes their music well. On “White Light” it is almost as if they had spent no time apart as they continue to evoke the joyful spirit that has always been present in a Corrs album.

The first half of the album has a timeless pop feel. “I Do What I Like” starts the album with a generic pop song, but The Corrs have the talent to do this type of song well. Second up is “Bring On the Night” and it is a good choice for the first single from the album. It is a re-introduction to The Corrs for old fans and a catchy hello to new fans. These songs in the first half album are varied in tempo and mood, all of them feature distinctive Corrs moments and the combination of The Corrs talent with lush pop production works well. “Bring On the Night”, “Kiss of Life” and “Strange Romance” display more of The Corrs‘ musical personality, and they are the better songs from the first half for it. On the second half of the album the band immerse themselves further in their Irish influences and create the best songs on the album. “Ellis Island” is outstanding. With a piano featuring throughout the track, the group harmonises, the traditional instruments are prominent. “Gerry’s Reel”, a jaunty instrumental follows and the strong Celtic influences remain throughout the remainder of the album.

In “White Light” The Corrs have returned with their polished harmonies to give us an album that may be their best yet. At the weakest the songs are good but lack the personality that is evident in their stronger work. At the best they have integrated their influences and instruments more masterfully than in their prior work. Only time will answer the question for the rest of the world, for me, I will say it is their best so far.
