HYDROGYN – Tears for Fears cover released
Hydrogyn puts a new, darker spin on a Tears For Fears hit; drops new video for “Mad World,” the 4th single released from the hit album “The Boiling Point”
Hydrogyn is no stranger to re-vamping a classic song and Hydronizing it. The bands take on the 1982 hit “Mad World,” offers a darker, modernized spin on Tears For Fears first chart hit.
Hydrogyn’s founder, Jeff Westlake, gives some incite on covering the song:
“Mad World” is a song that Holly and Jacob brought to the table, wanting to do as a cover. I’ve never been a fan of the song, but what they did with the arrangement and how we went about it is just stunning. So we worked it up as a band and I think that it came out really, really well.”

Founder and guitarist Jeff Westlake has surrounded himself with an all-new lineup for Hydrogyn’s latest release, the band’s first since 2017. Westlake and bandmates Holly Hines Freed (vocals), Ryan Stepp (guitar), Jacob Freed (bass) and Scot Clayton II (drums) draw inspiration from all of their collective influences to create a fresh sound that will melt your speakers.
From the scorching rockers such as “Damaged Goods” and “Sweet Addiction,” to the mellow and deep emotions of “Hostage” (Only Available on the Deluxe Edition) the band is sounding bigger, better and tighter than ever. Everything about this new album is hot, from the title to the last guitar lick. You aren’t going to want to miss this!
Formed in January 2004, Hydrogyn quickly took the music world by storm and quickly landed sponsorship deals with beverage giants Budweiser and Pepsi. With a full 18 months of touring and putting out their own, self-produced album in 2004, the band landed a recording contract with the great Michael Wagner. Upon entering his Wire World Studio based in Nashville, Tennessee the band set out to record what was to become a multi-Billboard charting release in their 2006 effort “Bombshell.”
After the release of “Bombshell,” the band embarked on a tour of Europe in September and around the world that October.
Over the next eight years, Hydrogyn, continued to turn out products on a yearly basis with other Billboard charting successes to go along with a consistent string of live dates. In 2014, original vocalist Julie Westlake left and the band went on hiatus for a much needed break and re-evaluation of the band by Jeff Westlake.
At the end of the year the band brought in Erica Parrott to take over the lead vocal duties and a whole new energy and the release “Redemption” took form. This line up of Parrott, Boggs, Sammons, Cardilino and Westlake never played a show together due to unfortunate events. Lead vocalist, Erica Parrot was attacked by a dog and her recovery set the entire project back into a hiatus.
In 2019 Parrott left the band and Jeff Westlake commenced the search for a new vocalist and targeted Holly Hines Freed. Freed had been a decade long friend and client of Westlake’s. It was the singer that he originally wanted after Julie’s departure, but Freed was involved in her own project and the planets did not align at the time.
Forward to 2020, with Hines Freed accepting the Lead Vocalist position, the band was once again repopulated by Westlake. With Holly on vocals, her husband and bass player Jacob Freed in tow, Ryan Stepp on guitar and vocals, Scot Clayton II on drums and vocals and Westlake again on guitar and vocals, Hydrogyn was revitalized and set to take on the world.
What came out of the band and the writing sessions for the new album, “The Boiling Point” is considered by Westlake to be the band’s strongest album to date. The band has recorded a live album due in December 2021 and are currently working a brand new album for 2022.
