Review by Alysha Hayden
Chelsea Wolfe is an artist that suffers from sleep paralysis. That space between conscious lucidity and unconsciousness is where her influence comes for her music. In reading that in her bio I knew I needed to listen to her album and Chelsea didn’t disappoint me at all. “Carrion Flowers” has an exquisite black and white video that I encourage you to watch and I love how the guitars are almost screaming in your ears while her voice overlays with the lyrics. “Dragged Out” continues with the distorted sounds coming from the band while she sings of being dragged places by her mental state. It’s a quite a clever way of portraying the fog that can occur in the mind. “Maw” has a rather simple acoustic melody opening which then leads into a more complex sound that fits in so well with the supernatural themes in her lyrics. This is a track you could easily find on the soundtrack for the latest blockbuster fantasy film. “After the Fall” is a unique take on a romantic track but fits in beautifully with this highly creative album. I feel everything about this album and this artist is unique. Chelsea is her own genre, perhaps because of the mental intersections that she must traipse however it has allowed her the artistic lubrication to bless our ears with an outside the box album that deserves to be celebrated.
