Review by Alysha Hayden
Jess and the Ancient Ones are a psychedelic rock band from Finland that formed in 2010. This certainly was a new genre for me with Jess and the Ancient Ones sounding like something straight out of the 70s with their occult themes and instrumental choices. Even their album cover seems to have been inspired by that period. The record opens with “Samhain” which launches with a voice over in the style of an events recording for history about a witches sabbat. Straight away this interesting opening intruiged me to listen on and I was pleased with what I heard. It was a very easy listening track with a catchy beat that I wasn’t expecting. “The Equinox Death Trip” continued the occult themes with the frontwoman Jess providing an astral raising to the lyrics while the band keeps the psychedlic sound pumping. Throughout the album those strange sound bites of old recordings play though, in theme with the creative style of the album. In full honesty this album wasn’t for me. In theme it’s right up my alley, so I did enjoy the lyrics but the style of music isn’t my particular cup of tea. That being said, I did enjoy listening to this album. If psychedelic rock is a genre you enjoy, then definitely give “Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes” a good listen.
