Review by Tony Cannella
The Italian Gothic metal band Macbeth was formed in 1995. They have just released their fifth album “Neo-Gothic Propaganda”. I have to admit that I am not super familiar with this band having only heard “Superangelic Hate Bringers” prior to this. That was their last album released almost 7 years ago, so after a lengthy hiatus they are making their return and the results are better than I could have imagined.
Macbeth includes two lead singers who work well off one another. Female vocalist Morena has a clean style that I would compare to Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil. I’m not saying she sounds like her (well, maybe a little bit) but she has a similar tone and style. Her male counterpart is Andreas who alternates between a clean gothic style and a more extreme voice. The songs are pretty heavy but still plenty melodic. Among the highlights are: “Scent of Winter”, “Slow Motion Tragedies”, “Empire’s Fall” and “Dogma”. The whole thing maintains a strong consistency throughout.
While I may not have been all that familiar with Macbeth prior to this, I am now. After listening to “Neo-Gothic Propaganda” I am now a fan and look forward to exploring their back catalogue. “Neo-Gothic Propaganda” is the sound of a band that has been away for far too long. They sound hungry and ready to make up for lost time.
