The new chapter Pirates is here. Despite Visions of Atlantis being formed in 2000, and for whatever reason, they have somewhat flown under the radar when it comes to symphonic metal. It’s a shame because, despite many lineup changes, the band has released a strong musical catalog dating back to its 2002 debut, “Eternal Endless Infinity.” And now the new chapter Pirates is here.

Their current lineup is perhaps the most cohesive unit they’ve ever had, which can be heard in their most recent masterwork, “Pirates II—Armada.” “Pirates II” begins with an atmospheric, beautiful intro, “To Those Who Choose to Fight.”  The emotional vocals of singer extraordinaire Clementine Delauney are at the fore, leading into the bombastic “The Land of the Free.”

The Pirates duo

The dual male/female vocals between Clementine and Michele Guaitoli are so on point, and they do it as well as anyone.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the band, who are simply on fire throughout the record.

The single “Monsters”

Next up is the epic-sounding “Monsters,” which comes crashing out of the gate.  This song has a chorus that is so damn catchy and monstrous (pun intended).  “Monster” is my favorite song, hands down, on an album chock full of great material.  “Tonight I’m Alive” moves briskly and keeps the momentum going.  “Armada” opens with a heavy riff and turns into one of the more aggressive tracks.

The epic “The Dead of the Sea” is the first of two songs to clock in at over 7 minutes.  Despite its length, it never gets boring and maintains the listener’s interest throughout.  Other highlights include: “Ashes of the Sea,” “Collide,” and “Where the Sky and Ocean Blend” (also over 7 minutes in duration).

I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that ‘Pirates II” may be Visions of Atlantis’ best work to date.  They may not be the most successful symphonic metal band, but they continue to be one of the best in the genre.
