Review by Tony Cannella
From France comes the exceptional symphonic power metal force known as Kerion. Their second full-length release is titled “The Origins” and from start to finish I can’t find enough positive adjectives to describe this band. After the brief symphonic intro “Prelude” the band tear into the opener “Time of Fantasy”. This song actually starts off with male vocals, before lead vocalist Flora Spinelli joins in. My favorite track is “Face of the Beast”. This is just a powerful tune that really serves as a showcase to Kerion In all their symphonic glory. This song also highlights the stellar musicianship that Kerion are capable of. “Ghosts of Memories” is a beautiful ballad and Kerion follow that up with the pounding metal of “Resurrection”. The album comes to its conclusion with the 9-minute “Requiem of the Black Rose” and an acoustic version “Time of Fantasy”. Throughout the course of this 61-minute CD, Kerion weaves its tales of the epic and magical with wonderful results. Other highlights include: “Black Fate”, “We Will Go” (this song has just an infectious chorus that sticks with you long after you’ve heard it for the first time), “Angels of the Last Hope” and “Dark Isle”. The symphonic metal genre has produced some very good bands but at times the form of music can come off as stale to me. Well, Kerion are most certainly a fresh voice in the Symphonic genre. “The Origins” is a fantastic release that will give fans of symphonic power metal something to cheer about.
